Black Mesa Lava flows created a flat topped butte that juts out toward the west bank of the Rio Grande south of Las Cruces. Archaic and Jornada-style petroglyphs are inscribed on the sharp-edged boulders that form the dark, ragged fringe of the butte. rock art index page
