Chaco Canyon

Chaco Canyon was revered as a sacred site long before it approached its cultural apex with the Anasazi a thousand years ago. It remains one of the finest places on the planet, and it will be a fine monument to leave behind when we are all gone.

After a meandering road trip through northern New Mexico and southern Colorado, we decided on something of a whim to visit Chaco Canyon for only the second time in fifteen years. By chance, we arrived on the eve of the Summer Solstice. On that day near the top of Fajada Butte a vertical shaft of sunlight neatly bisects a petroglyph spiral to mark the longest day.
