Smena-8

Doubtless one of the most popular Smena cameras. Smena-8 was the camera USSR tried to enter the international market. Camera indentical to Smena-6 with a special device for reverse taking-up from cassette to cassette, possible to use just one cassette with take-up spool. Pop-up rewind knob. In the back of camera imprinted either old GOMZ logo (as well as on the lens faceplate), either blank circle.

1st version (GOMZ Logotype)

 

 
   

PK2655. An earliest so far known version to exist. Black body and dark-grey top plate. GOMZ logo both on the lens frontplate and rear-door. "SDELANO B CCCP" markings in Cyrillic characters on the shutter housing, below the serial number. Black arrow engraved on the film rewind knob. Tripod thread - 3/8''.

Film advance knob has unusual grove in the middle (see sample opposite).

 

PK2655 - Smena-8  #269842.

 

   

PK2660. An export version of the particular camera. "Smena-8" markings in Roman characters on the frontplate. No otherwise different.

 

PK2660 - Smena-8  #079701.

 

   

PK2665. Camera identical to samples above, but under uncommon export name "COSMIC 35" (United Kingdom market). The same black body and dark-grey top plate. GOMZ logo both on the lens frontplate and rear-door. An export "MADE IN USSR" markings on the shutter housing, below the serial number. Black arrow engraved on the film rewind knob. The film advance knob becoming usual on this type. Tripod thread - 3/8''. 

At least 3 versions of Cosmic-35 camera are known to exist (see 2 another types below).

2nd version (LOOMP Logotype)  

 

 

 

 
   

PK2670. Camera identical to 1st version, but with very uncommon "LOOMP" logotype on the lens (see picture below). "SDELANO B CCCP" markings in Cyrillic characters on the shutter housing, below the serial number. Black arrow engraved on the film rewind knob. Tripod thread - 3/8''.

PK2675. This beautiful sample was found at Bievres Fair (France) 2009. Camera identical to Smena-8 #038312, but under export name "COSMIC 35". The blank circle imprinted on camera's rear door already.

The genuine Cosmic-35 with LOOMP markings is very rare to find nowadays.

PK2680. The most common version of the particular camera. New "LOMO" logotype on the lens already. The blank circle imprinted on camera's rear door. No more "No." prefix in serial number.  An early samples still come with tripod thread - 3/8'' yet, though the big majority of type-3 cameras have tripod thread 1/4'' already. "SDELANO B CCCP" or "MADE IN USSR" markings on shutter housing, near the serial number. No more black arrow, enagraved on film rewind knob on late cameras. A lot of variations in this group, indeed.

 

PK2680 - Smena-8  #007477.

 

   

PK2682. Less common to find version of the regular Smena-8 camera. Identical to PK2680, but with mysterious "T" character in the serial number, as on some Lubitel-2 cameras (see picture below). No otherwise different.

PK2685. Uncommon "Great October-50“ anniversary version of the particular camera (released in 1966-1967). "SDELANO B CCCP" markings markings on shutter housing, near the serial number. Still black arrow engraved on the film rewind knob. Tripod thread - 3/8''.

PK2690. Less common version of late Smena-8 camera. White top plate, instead of ususal dark-grey ones on regular cameras. "MADE IN USSR" markings on the shutter housing, below the serial number. No more black arrow engraved on the film rewind knob. Tripod thread - 1/4''.

PK2695. Less common Smena-8 camera with export markings in Roman characters. Unusual white top plate on the particular camera (see sample opposite). "MADE IN USSR" markings on the shutter housing, below the serial number. No more black arrow engraved on the film rewind knob. Tripod thread - 3/8''.

PK2700. An export version identical to #334128, but with usual dark-grey top plate again. "MADE IN USSR" markings on the shutter housing, below the serial number. No more black arrow engraved on the film rewind knob (see picture below). Tripod thread - 1/4''.

PK2705. - Camera under uncommon export name "COSMIC 35" (for United Kingdom market). Changed nameplate design with "LOMO" logotype on the lens. "MADE IN USSR" markings on the shutter housing, below the serial number. Tripod thread - 1/4''.
