Zenit Automat | |

In 1984 the Zenit-automat entered the mass production. The Automat was the first KMZ camera with Pentax K mount (which was proposed as an open-standard by Pentax and distributed freely) and a focal shutter with horizontal-travel cloth curtains. The only operation mode was aperture-priority. At least 3 variants of Zenit Auto existing: an early cameras came under name Zenit Automat in Cyrillic/Roman. The export version used the "Motorola" electronics instead of soviet ones. The Late Automat's came under name "Zenit Auto" in Roman characters.

Less common to find early version of Zenit Automat camera. According to KMZ official sources at least 2 units released in 1984, 107 cameras - in 1985 and 412 cams - in 1986. Camera opposite from Ilya Stolyar (USA) coll.
Camera opposite is fitted with late MC Zenitar-K "FISH-EYE" 2.8/16mm lens.

Still common to find version of Zenit Automat camera. Nameplate markings in Cyrillic characters. Some cameras have Soviet Sign of Quality on the shutter advance lever (see picture below).

Uncommon export version of Zenit Automat camera with EFCO french electronics inside (camera's passport has special insert announcing this). Though the Soviet Union falled down in 1991, the particular camera (1993) still has "Made in USSR" silkscreened markings on th rear plate (see picture below). Seems to be the latest version, under export name Zenit Auto. Though the Soviet Union falled down in 1991, Zenit Auto body still has "Made in USSR" markings until early 1993. Only in late 1993-1994 (the last years of mass production) it was changed to "Made in Russia" already.

This very rare camera is identical to the Zenit-Automat, but semi-automatic. Electromechanical shutter and electronic selftimer. LED meter indications. K-bayonet mount, delivered with Helios-44K-4 2/58 lens [2].

Zenit-AM | |

This camera appears to be a less expensive variation of the Zenit Automat. It has an electronically timed metal fan type vertically traveling shutter. It also has a few cosmetic changes and the lower flash jack has been changed into a power jack to allow operation from a remote battery box in extremely cold weather. The camera does not have the built in viewfinder shutter. This camera will not operate without four PX625 or equivalent batteries [2].

It's interesting to mention, that first Zenit-AM cameras (1988-1992) have "Made in USSR" markings on the rear plate, some cameras from 1992 (see camera #92001566 above) come without any country's markings. The late Zenit-AM cameras have "Made in Russia" markings on the rear plate already (see picture below).

Next in Zenit Automat (Zenit-AM) line was the Zenit-APk. Its distinguishing feature was the introduction of a manual shutter mode in addinion to aperture-priority. The original FZL-84 shutter was also changed to a licensed 'Copal Square' shutter [2].
